How I Like To Organize My Life
To keep it organized I have my own system that I came up with. This is a combination of techniques and ideas from handfuls of blind people who do this every day and live life in an organized manner. I have tweaked what I do to work for me, which is what I recommend for you. Take what i have, like it sink in, then tweak if so it fits you best. No one way is the right way. That is what is so great about life and learning to do things non visually or with limited vision, is that there are so many different ways to achieve one task, you decide what works and YOU DO YOU!
Personally, I love totes. You know those plastic bins with lids?... yeah those. I love having things organized and in totes for example, all my hair stuff gets a tote, all my make up is in a tote, all my art supplies get a tote, even though that tote is overflowing and in major need for a bigger one. Because I am low vision, I tend to make things more dual media, so I use a combination of braille labels and labels written in sharpie. I like this approach so if someone comes in that does not know braille they can also use the labels and my organization system. This definitely helps when my parents help me move all the time.
I love labeling things so I don't need to smell and feel things as much, Especially cleaning supplies, that can be dangerous. like my spice jars are braille labeled, my make up is in the process of being labeled, and especially cleaning supplies. I was listening to an audio book in which a gentleman accidentally used syrup to wash dishes because it was in a similar shaped bottle as the dish soap so when he put his groceries away he put the soap in the fridge and the syrup with the cleaning products. The importance of labeling. I also like to have a specific spot for things, like the vacuum always goes in the corner in the kitchen, the dirty clothes is always to the left of the dresser etc. This takes away the time I would use searching for where it moved to. If everything has a place, things are easier to find non visually.
Clothes each have their own drawer for what they are. Socks get their own drawer, t shirts get their own drawer,...etc. My closet is organized by color so I have a good idea of what I want to wear and i can find things that match easier. I will do a separate post about how people organize clothes and make sure things match.
