Accessible Appliances

Hello All,

I wanted to show you how I made the appliances around my home accessible.  I made a list of the buttons I would use.  You can use a CCTV if you are low vision, a reader or a great app called Be My Eyes.  (Be My Eyes is a free app that calls up volunteers to face time and give you information about your surroundings. ) I made a list then abbreviated each button name to a one or two no more than three braille characters. For Example, Normal is "N" Start is "ST" For the buttons I use bump dots on each of the odd numbered buttons. On the dishwasher I also have a clean/dirty sign that has braille and is also high contrast colors so I can check if the load is clean or dirty.  This helps in households with multiple people so there is communication on whether or not the dishes are clean or dirty.  I do not enjoy having to smell the dishes to check to see if they are clean.    I have had microwaves in which I put braille numbers and I found that very helpful.  I believe the bump dots or braille on the numbers is equally effective.  My preference is bump dots.  The bump dots you see in the microwave picture are little half pearl scrapbook accents.  I thought this would be a pretty touch. A lot cheaper than ordering real deal bump dots.  I find that putting braille on my appliances is most effective rather than using landmarks and hoping the buttons I click are correct..  I also find that I am most independent and do not have to rely on anyone to give me visual information.   I have some usable vision and am slowly coming to terms with the fact that I cannot rely on it.  Like one of my wise professors has said, and I identify with is "I have enough vision to be dangerous without a cane." If you have any questions about how I brailled my appliances or need suggestions, please do not hesitate to reach out! I will do a separate post on how I labeled the washer and dryer.

Photo One Description: Labeled dishwasher with braille on all buttons.  There is a clean and dirty sign with braille.

Photo Two: Microwave with braille labels on most of the buttons and bump dots on the odd numbered buttons.
