What We Wish Sighted People Knew

I have gotten many suggestions to do a post like this.  This is a compilation of my own points as well as some ideas and inspiration from other blogs.  Please comment if you have any you would add! These are in no particular order.

  1. Just because my vision changes, does not mean my interests do.
  2. Blindness and vision loss can feel socially isolating.
  3. We have "bad" and "good" vision days.
  4. We don't dwell on our blindness daily.  Some might for a time if they are grieving their new vision loss.
  5. We all lead normal happy lives, we don't shut ourselves in a house and expect others to take care of us.  I still watch movies, clean my toilets, take out the trash and pick up my dogs poop.
  6. Not all Visually Impaired people use a cane or guide dog.
  7. Blindness is a spectrum.  Only 15% of blind people see total darkness. 84% see some light or have partial vision.
  8. Speak to me normally. You can say "Nice to see you" because it is,  I use "see" because seeing for me is different, using sounds, touch etc.
  9. We do not need acute supervision.  I walked 5 blocks to the bus stop, I can step up onto the bus on my own.
  10. We appreciate when help is offered, please do not be offended if we polity decline.
  11. We don't have heightened senses, we just pay more attention to our other senses and are not distracted by visual stimuli.
  12. Yes, I dream.
  13. Most blind and visually impend individuals are open to talking about what it is like and what caused the vision loss, but that is not the only thing we like to talk about.

  2. 17. Please don’t ask if I can see this while waving your hand in my face. Accept that I’m blind and ask me anything.

    18. If I ask a question about the menu at a restaurant, don’t tell me what page it’s on. I probably asked for a reason.
